Fabritecture designed and delivered the new ETFE canopy at the entrance to the newly redeveloped Singapore Oceanarium at Resorts World Sentosa. The sculptural form of the canopy creates a bold architectural gateway, delivering a high-impact, weather-protected arrival experience for guests, queues, and presentations.
At the core of the structure is Fabritecture’s first four-layer ETFE cushion system. This canopy is a technical milestone that showcases advanced design coordination and fabrication precision. Four-layer ETFE systems are rare due to their complex structural requirements, but offer superior thermal performance, acoustic dampening, and light diffusion compared to traditional double or triple layered cushions. The cushions also integrate custom-programmed LED lighting, enabling dynamic visual effects and an immersive night-time presence that enhances the guest experience.
Supported by a bespoke asymmetrical steel frame mounted on a suspended slab, the canopy demanded high-precision load transfer detailing and fully customised steelwork. The resort’s restricted mid-site location added another layer of complexity, requiring strategic logistics planning and sequenced installation to work within tight access and staging zones.
Clad in precision-milled aluminium, the canopy is designed for long-term performance in Singapore’s tropical environment, combining lightweight durability, visual transparency, and environmental efficiency.
